Flinn-Engdahl regions

The Flinn-Engdahl regions (or F-E regions) are a division of the Earth into seismic and geographical regions. In seismology, it is the standard of localizing earthquakes.

Structure

After the 1995 revision there are 754 F-E regions (also called geographical regions), subsequently numbered from 1 to 757 with three gaps (172, 299 and 550) at dissolved regions. The regions are grouped into 50 larger seismic regions. The borders of the regions are always on integer numbers of degrees of geographical latitude or longitude. Borders of the F-E regions may therefore differ from political boundaries. For instance, the F-E region 545 ("Northern Italy") also includes parts of France, Switzerland, Austria and Slowenia. The smallest F-E region is Buru, Indonesia (No. 271) covering only one degree of both latitude and longitude, the largest is North Pacific Ocean (No. 611) covering large parts of the Pacific Ocean.

History

The first division of the Earth into what today are the seismic zones has been proposed by Beno Gutenberg and Charles F. Richter in 1954. The proposal included 51 regions, two of which were merged in 1965 to form SR 30 (Middle East – Crimea – Eastern Balkans).

The full two-tier scheme was proposed in 1965 by Edward A. Flinn and Eric R. Engdahl. The first official definition was published in 1974 with some minor changes to the 1965 proposal, and a revision was officially introduced in 1995. Naming of the regions is not fixed, but the users of the Flinn-Engdahl scheme follow mostly the recommendations published in 1995, sometimes shortening the proposed names. The following list also follows these recommendations, with some minor adjustments due to renaming of political entities.
